Financial Support
Note: The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) has raised its teaching assistantships an additional $2,000 for new incoming students starting Fall 2008.
Assistantships in Film, Video, Digital Arts & Animation, Programming, Documentary, Interpretation, Virtual Reality, and Robotics for Fall 2010
The Department of Media Study at the University at Buffalo (UB) typically offers 11 one-year Teaching Assistantships (TAs) in film, video, digital arts & animation, programming, documentary, and interpretation,Virtual Reality and Robotics. These assistantships may be renewed for a second year, and there are also other opportunities for continuing support.
Each new assistantship carries a stipend of $13,400 for ten months and requires teaching one beginning class each semester or, for GAs, an equivalent amount of lab support. A full tuition scholarship is normally also offered to the successful candidates. Current figures for graduate student tuition are $3,450 per semester for New York State residents and $5,460 per semester for out-of-state residents. Scholarship awards are applied to tuition only; any graduate fees are not covered. In order to keep scholarship expenses as low as possible, out-of-state students (not international) are required to apply for New York State residency during their first semester, and New York State residents must apply for TAP (Tuition Assistance Program). The University retains the right to add additional charges or to change the above rates at any time.
You must be accepted into a graduate program at UB before a Teaching Assistantship can be offered. Our website offers complete information about our department and our Master of Fine Arts in Media Arts Production, interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Humanities in Film Studies, and Dual Architecture + Media Study (MArch+MFA) degree programs.
To apply for a Teaching Assistantship, Media Arts Production MFA or MArch+MFA applicants should check the appropriate box in the online MFA application and indicate the area of teaching interest in the essay portion. For a GA position, applicants should also state their programming and specialized skills. [Current UB graduate students and those applying through the interdisciplinary MAH Film Studies program should send a letter indicating the area of teaching interest, a resume, and work samples (with a SASE if you want the work returned) to: TA Application Committee, Department of Media Study, 231 Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260-6020.]
